Legends Of The Lost and Found album cover DEC 14, 1978 * REHEARSAL * NEW YORK, NY * FULL TILT STUDIO

Dec. 14 was our first official studio rehearsal for a live LP that would ultimately be entitled "Legends Of The Lost And Found" (why "Legends Of The Lost & Found"...am still trying to figure that one out). Furthermore we did much rehearsal at all of the 30 shows leading up to the March 4, 6, and 7 live recordings dates in Tennessee. And, as we became more familiar with the songs we began to perform them at the concerts. I wish my journal entries had been more specific as to which songs we worked on each day but following is all that those records revealed.

On this particular day we ran down Harry's 'disco' song entitled "Goodbye To The 70s", a song that would never see the light of day. We also started work on my personal favorite from the LP, "Pretzel Land". And, for the record, the words..."If only we could all be like that man" heard toward the end of the song, were written by me as well as the chords played over those lyrics. I was quite impressed with myself when Harry grinned with approval when I played it for him.

DEC 15, 1978 * REHEARSAL * NEW YORK, NY * FULL TILT STUDIO

Rehearsed "Copper And The Penny", "Seasons & The Sky" (which would again fail to make it on to a record), and "Old Folkie".

DEC 20-21 * REHEARSAL * NEW YORK, NY * FULL TILT STUDIO

More rehearsal for the "Legends Of The Lost And Found" LP (no specifics noted in my journal).

DEC 26 (day) * REHEARSAL * BROOKLYN, NY * REHEARSAL ROOM/SMITH ST.

This rehearsal was arranged at a place where Doug Walker and I would often jam with various people. John couldn't make it to this one but we did more rehearsal for the "Legends Of The Lost And Found" LP (no specifics noted in my journal).

DEC 26 (evening) * REHEARSAL/RECORDING* NEW YORK, NY * SECRET SOUND STUDIO

After the afternoon rehearsal in Brooklyn we went to Secret Sound in NYC (where the "Dance Band..." and "Living Room Suite" LPs had been recorded) to put down some reference tracks of the tunes we'd been working on just to see how they were sounding. We recorded "Old Folkie", "Pretzel land", "Goodbye To The 70s", and "Seasons & The Sky".

DEC 27 (day) * REHEARSAL * NEW YORK, NY * CARROLLS

More rehearsal for the "Legends Of The Lost And Found" LP (no specifics noted in my journal).

DEC 27 (evening) * REHEARSAL/RECORDING * NEW YORK, NY * SECRET SOUND

After the afternoon rehearsal at Carrolls, we went to Secret Sound in NYC (where the "Dance Band..." and "Living Room Suite" LPs had been recorded) to put down some more reference tracks of the tunes we'd been working on just to see how they were sounding (no specifics noted in my journal).

JAN 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 1979 * REHEARSAL * NEW YORK, NY * FULL TILT STUDIO

After two rehearsals on Jan 3 & 4 that Harry could not attend, I called him to tell him of two others on Jan 9 & 10 but found out from his step-daughter that he'd be vacationing on some island on those days. This was the kind of thing that infuriated the band and caused internal problems (in silent protest, Big John did not attend the rehearsals on Jan 3 & 9). Harry called me back the next day and we arranged for at least one rehearsal with him on Jan 7. Unfortunately I have no record of what we rehearsed on any of these days.

JAN 17-18, 1979 * HAMILTON, ONT * HAMILTON PLACE

After a long Xmas/New Years break we were back out on the road. The plan on some of these new songs Has Steve Chapin playing Hammond Organ and cellist Kim Scholes playing Fender Rhodes piano and a string synthesizer. So on the Jan 17 gig we had those instruments on stage with us for the first time. No rehearsal on Jan 17 but at the sound check on Jan 18 we rehearsed "Old Folkie" and "Get On With It". My journal states..."Now all we have to do is teach Harry our arrangements"

JAN 24, 1979 * KINGSTON, ONT * QUEENS UNIVERSITY

On this date Harry was 2 hours and 10 min late which I believe was the record for him. The show ended at 1:30 AM!

FEB 2, 1979 * SOUTH BEND, IN * MORRIS CIVIC

Rehearsed the song "Legends Of The Lost & Found" (with Harry!!) at the sound check. The instrumental middle section of this one always sounded very prog-rock to me like Genesis or something. And, on this stretch of shows, our soundman recorded the concerts so that we were able to listen to a series of playbacks after the shows backstage and at the hotels.

FEB 4, 1979 * CINCINNATI, OH * MUSIC HALL

Harry completely took over this rehearsal ("Copper & The Penny") at the sound check with musical ideas that, let's say, the band did not find very flattering to the song. Here's the dirt...he was pissed off because: a TV commitment prevented him from making the sound check/rehearsal onstage in Columbus on Feb 3. When the band found out that he wouldn't be there we decided to scratch the rehearsal altogether. Then it turned out that Harry was able to get to the rehearsal and when he got there was when he found out that there was no rehearsal.

FEB 7, 1979 * MADISON, WI * DANE COUNTY COLISEUM

More dirt/fallout from the day before...Harry chewed us out pretty good at the intermission for not rehearsing more without him. On the other hand the band was not happy that Harry wasn't making more of an effort to be at these important sound check/rehearsals. Later on at the hotel that meeting continued. We listened to some tapes and got a rehearsal schedule together for the remaining 10 shows before we're supposed to begin recording.

FEB 8, 1979 * ANN ARBOR, MI * UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

More tension regarding the events of the past few days back at Harry's hotel room as we listened to the tape of the show.

FEB 15, 1979 * PITTSBURGH, PA * STANLEY THEATER

The news at this gig was that it was decided that Steve Chapin would be the producer of the live LP.

FEB 16, 1979 * HOBOKEN, NJ * STEVENS TECH

After all the rehearsal planning, Harry once again did not attend the sound check/rehearsal!!!! I remember that later that night he offered each of us money in the event that he couldn't attend the next rehearsal. We told him that we didn't want money, we just wanted him to make the rehearsals!!!!

FEB 26, 1979 (morning) * REHEARSAL * NEW YORK, NY * SECRET SOUND STUDIO

This was supposed to be a recording session for "Goodbye To The 70s" but, with Harry being a no-show again (!!!!), it turned out to be a band rehearsal for "Stranger With The Melodies".

MARCH 4, 1979 * LIVE RECORDING SESSION/CONCERT * MEMPHIS, TN * ORPHEUM THEATER

This was the first of three nights of recording what would be the "Legends Of The Lost & Found" LP. We did much sound-checking for the recording as well as rehearsal but didn't get to hear any playbacks after the show.

MARCH 6, 1979 * LIVE RECORDING SESSION/CONCERT * CHATTANOOGA, TN * MEM. AUDITORIUM

Second night of "Legends Of The Lost & Found" live sessions. Afterwards we listened to playbacks of past two shows and were fairly pleased.

MARCH 7, 1979 * LIVE RECORDING SESSION/CONCERT * KNOXVILLE, TN * MEM. AUDITORIUM

Listened to playback of the third show. Harry very turned on. I remember him listening, smiling, very animated, positive, into what he was hearing.

Here's one of the lyric sheets that Harry prepared for us for the "Legends OF The Lost And Found" rehearsals, replete with musical doodlings, crossouts, chords, etc.
